Midnight Muse: Evoking The Muse live jazz performance and intuitive canvas painting by artist Roger Ridley in NYC

“ Evoking The Muse “ by Midnight Muse

Evoking The Muse

Evoking the Muse is a live visual performance in which the final panel of a triptych is completed on stage in dialogue with improvised jazz. The work invites the audience into the interior of the creative mind at the precise moment where intuition becomes form.

Three panels occupy the space—two completed works surrounding a third that remains unfinished. Over the course of a 25–30 minute performance, the final piece is resolved in real time. The act of painting is not illustrative but performative: gestures are deliberate, pauses are intentional, and movement is treated as a visible extension of thought.

Music operates as the animating force of the piece. The ecstatic, improvised nature of jazz mirrors the firing of neurons, the emotional surges, and the moments of uncertainty that accompany creation. Sound does not accompany the image—it activates it.

This work follows Binding the Muse, a previous performance centered on discipline, restraint, and containment. Evoking the Muse explores the opposite gesture: release, summoning, and response. The muse is not portrayed as a figure, but as a state that emerges when attention, rhythm, and presence align.

The audience is invited to step inside the artist’s cognitive and emotional landscape as the work unfolds—witnessing the process of creation in real time and co-authoring meaning through proximity, synchronicity, and their own internal response to the act.
