About Midnight Muse – Where Nocturnal Vision Meets Contemporary Form
“ Midnight Sessions “ by Midnight Muse
A world made, for one night…
Midnight Muse is an artist-led production studio and performance platform creating intimate, immersive worlds where visual art, live music, movement, poetry, and generative imagery converge.Founded and directed by New York artist Roger Ridley, Midnight Muse brings artists and audiences together through live experiences of beauty, experimentation, and human connection.
“We do not present performances of beauty. We construct live experiences of beauty.”
Beyond the Canvas…
What happens when art leaves the wall? When a painting becomes an environment, music becomes a conversation, movement becomes an image, and light becomes a living material?
“ Midnight Machina “ by Midnight Muse
Midnight Muse began with an interest in these questions. It emerged from the belief that art can be experienced not only as an object to observe, but as something to enter, encounter, and participate in.Each gathering is conceived as a world of its own. Visual art, sound, performance, and physical space are brought into conversation, creating experiences that exist somewhere between fine art, live performance, and immersive theater.A guitar may accompany a dancer. Poetry may unfold beside a painting. Projected imagery may transform the architecture of a room. Artists work in proximity to one another, allowing distinct practices to meet and produce something that none could create alone
The result is an evolving practice in which the experience itself becomes the artwork...
The Art of Gathering…
At the heart of Midnight Muse is a simple conviction: the people in the room are part of the work.We are interested in the space between the performance and the observer, between the artist and the audience, between what is planned and what emerges in the moment.Rather than pursue spectacle for its own sake, Midnight Muse creates intimate environments in which people can experience art up close. The scale is intentional. The atmosphere matters. The room matters. The relationships between the people who occupy it matter. Each edition begins with a distinct creative premise and develops in response to its collaborators, surroundings, and possibilities. No two gatherings are identical, yet each belongs to a larger, interconnected world. This is performance as an act of exchange. Art becomes not only something presented to an audience, but a catalyst for connection between artists, strangers, and the city they share.
“ Opening Ceremony “ by Midnight Muse
An Evolving History…
Midnight Muse began taking shape in New York in 2025 with Opening Ceremony, the first gathering in what would become an ongoing series of interdisciplinary experiments. What followed was not a fixed format, but a practice in motion.Binding the Muse explored the relationship between live painting and the physical language of performance. The Sound Between Us brought music and visual composition into dialogue. Subsequent editions expanded into contemporary dance, poetry, experimental sound, and site-responsive performance. With gatherings including Midnight Sessions and Sankofa Sessions, the project continued to explore the relationship between artistic disciplines, cultural spaces, and the communities that give them life.By 2026, Midnight Muse had moved through a growing constellation of New York spaces, from Sankofa Haus and the Paramount Hotel to Gibney, the McKittrick Hotel, Lavan Chelsea, and Baci Studios. Each new setting offered an opportunity to reconsider what a gathering could become. The work has continued to evolve through different collaborators, environments, and creative premises. Some editions have centered on sound and movement; others have explored visual transformation, the written word, or the relationship between the body and its surroundings.Throughout this evolution, the underlying intention has remained the same: to create a temporary world in which art is not confined to a single medium, and where human presence is as meaningful as the work being presented. The history of Midnight Muse is therefore not simply a chronology of events. It is the record of an artistic practice discovering what it can become.
Midnight Muse is not a departure from the studio. It is an extension of the studio into the world...
“ Youthful Ignorance “ by Midnight Muse
“We believe in intimacy over scale.
In presence over spectacle.
In collaboration as a creative force.
In the possibilities that emerge when different disciplines share the same space...”
Midnight Muse is deliberately attentive to the conditions that make meaningful artistic exchange possible: the care given to collaborators, the character of the environment, the freedom to experiment, and the relationships formed in the room. Not every moment needs to be explained. Not every experience needs to become permanent. There is value in being present for something as it unfolds, knowing that its particular form belongs to that time, that place, and those people. We are drawn to the tension between the ephemeral and the enduring: an experience that disappears, yet leaves behind a memory, an image, a feeling, or a new way of seeing...
WHAT REMAINS AFTER MIDNIGHT…
.
Every gathering eventually comes to an end.The music stops. The projections disappear. The room returns to its ordinary life. But something remains.A conversation that would not otherwise have happened. An image preserved in the archive. A collaboration that continues beyond the evening. A fleeting encounter that becomes part of someone's memory. The Midnight Muse Archive preserves traces of these encounters—not as substitutes for the experiences themselves, but as fragments of a world that continues to unfold. Each edition adds another chapter to an ongoing body of work, documenting its evolution while leaving space for what has yet to be imagined.Midnight Muse is, ultimately, an exploration of what art can make possible when it becomes a shared experience.A gathering. A collaboration. A temporary world. And an invitation to experience something that exists only because we are all there.
The night is temporary. The practice continues…
