“ The Sound Between Us “ by Midnight Muse
The Sound Between Us
The Sound Between Us is a live performance where music and image are created in direct conversation.
Set inside a historic landmark in New York City’s Theatre District, the work draws on a space shaped by decades of live performance. The Paramount Hotel holds memory of sound, movement, and transformation.
At the center of the performance, a canvas is constructed live. Sheet music and lyrics are wheat-pasted directly onto the surface, forming the foundation of the image. As the music evolves, the artist responds directly to its rhythm, structure, and improvisation, painting over and through the score. What is heard becomes physical. What is seen reshapes how the sound is felt.
The act of painting functions as a visual instrument. Layering replaces harmony. Silence becomes space. Just like hip-hop and jazz, the process is intuitive & responsive. The work does not illustrate the music — it listens to it.
This performance marks an evolution of Evoking the Muse, the first jazz collaboration between Midnight Muse and The Impossible Odds. The previous performance explored the spontaneity of transformation. The Sound Between Us transforms it into dialogue. Music and image actively shape, interrupt, and complete each other.
The audience is invited to witness a living exchange in tension, lyricism, risk, and resonance that exists between artist and musician, sound and surface. It is the moment where listening becomes visible.
